Lot 2584
SYRIA, Seleucis and Pieria. Antioch. Philip I, 244-249. Tetradrachm (Billon, 28 mm, 10.70 g, 6 h), 247. AYTOK K M IOYΛI ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟC CЄB Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Philip I to right. Rev. ΔΗΜΑΡX ЄΞOYCIAC ΥΠΑ ΤO Γ / ANTIOXIA / S C Eagle with spread wings standing right, holding wreath in beak. McAlee 918. Prieur 365. RPC VIII online ID 29150. Extremely rare with this bust type. Hairline flan crack and very slightly double struck, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. D. Löer, ex Savoca London E-Auction 4, 12 January 2020, 503.

This unusual bust clearly shows the scales of the armour (loriga scamata) instead of the usual breastplate. RPC online overcorrects both McAlee and Prieur, describing this bust type as cuirassed only, and merging it together with other types, but both previous authors are right in describing this obverse type as draped and cuirassed, since the paludamentum or military cloak is perfectly visible.
